Dansungsa, as the center of culture
In june 4th,1907, Ji Myung-keun, Park Tae-il, Joo Soo-young and other people including many actors opened the theater named Dansungsa. The meaning of name ‘Dansungsa’ is that “Let us gather our ability and power to make our wish real”. Dansungsa’s goal was to offer actors more stages to realize their dream and gain money to help other people who need help, such as orphanage, night schools and so on.
Also, Dansungsa is not only the first place of theater and acting, but also the first place that introduced boxing to Korea.
After Dansungsa had financial difficulty, in 1918, Park Seung-pil reopened Dansungsa to movie theater. From 1919, it started to open many movies such as <의리적 구토> in 1919, first Korean-self-made movie <장화홍련전> in 1924, <아리랑> by Na Woon-kyu in 1926, the first talking movie <춘향전> in 1935.
In 1939, Japanese took over Dansungsa for several years so that there were few Korean movies at that term, but after 1945’s independence, it was reopened with the original name, Dansungsa.

Unfortunately, Dansungsa went through bankruptcy in 2008, and it stopped to function as Korean movie theater. And after the plan to make Jongno-3-ga as Jewelry street, Dansungsa was also planned to be Jewelry center. But the plan was stopped due to the bankruptcy and financial difficulties, so it remained as empty building until 2012.
In 2016, Dansungsa building was remodeled as Dansunggold, which is Jewelry center. It functions as Jewelry department store with several floors, and it plans to reopen theater at B1 to continue function as the core of the Korean movie industry.
Picadili 1958, next generation of culture
One of the reason Dansungsa’s theater did not go well was the appearance of other movie theaters. Next to Dansungsa, there is "Picadili 1958", which is modern theater. In that time, there were a lot of theaters. Jongno 3 ga could be called as the entrance of new culture and the heaven of theaters. Not only Dansungsa and Picadili at Jongro-3-ga, there were several theaters such as Gukdo theater and Myeongbo theater at Euljiro street and Daehan theater at Chungmuro street. Most of these theaters were disappeared today or lost popularity than before, as better service and modern movie techniques are applied to newly-created theaters by big companies.
Now, with the movement to reopen and remember the memories about those classic theaters and the era of Korean movies, the theater Picadili was reopened with the name of 'Picadili 1958' by CGV. CGV Picadili 1958 was designed to remember and recall the yesterday of Korean movie theater and the classic atmosphere. At the same time, it offers modern movie technology and services so that every ages of people can enjoy the theater itself. For young people, it can be a movie theater which has the unique atmosphere and design. On the other hand, elder people would recall their memories when they were young, and feel like they are in 1958's Picadili. Thus, Picadili 1958 can be the connection and the window which connects between past and now, now and future.
